After analyzing feedback from more than 500,000 clinicians worldwide on EHR usage and reliability, KLAS Research reported “industry-wide issues” with system reliability and response time. Compliance
EHR reliability extends beyond system uptime. It’s also a measure of whether you can trust the EHR to incorporate regulatory changes to enable compliance in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
One compliance benchmark is certification by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). ONC certification is a voluntary certification program with standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria defined by the Department of Health and Human Services to support the availability of certified health IT. ONC-certified EHR technology must conform to the full scope of required capabilities, which are updated regularly.

Interoperability
Currently, EHR compliance and interoperability are closely linked. That’s because the ONC’s “Base EHR” requirements include the capability to exchange electronic health information with, and integrate electronic health information from, other sources. Interoperability is an essential component of ONC certification.
It’s important to note that although ONC certification is voluntary, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires ONC certification for participation in certain CMS programs, such as the MIPS Promoting Interoperability category.
Veradigm emphasizes interoperability by allowing seamless integration with other systems and electronic health information exchanges. This enables providers to access and share patient data across different healthcare settings, leading to more coordinated and efficient care delivery.
Veradigm also includes access to Carequality, a nonprofit interoperability framework, for all Veradigm EHR clients. Carequality’s interoperability framework supports access to health information across networks operated by EHR vendors, health information exchanges, and others.
Security
The security of today’s medical practices is threatened by the risk of cyberattacks that are more frequent, more sophisticated, and more likely to target smaller physician groups. Security failures, and the resulting data breaches and HIPAA violations, can interfere with patient care and expose sensitive health information.
Data breaches also carry high financial costs:
- Compromised healthcare data has a higher per-record cost—approximately $250—than in any other industry.
- If a practice fails to have strong security measures in place, each HIPAA violation can result in fines of $100 to $50,000 per exposed patient record, up to $1.5 million.
- If a breach results from Security Rule violations, the practice could face additional fines of up to $50,000 per day, subject to a separate maximum of $1.5 million per calendar year.
- Data breaches also result in reputation damage and lost business, which create additional financial consequences.

Certified Veradigm products include security features specified by the ONC Certification Rule, including authentication and access control, as well as authorization, auditing, and encryption features. Veradigm also employs a secure development lifecycle incorporating risk-based threat modeling, automated code reviews, and security testing for products.
Veradigm conducts additional certifications, accreditations, and independent reviews for our products as well, including SOC 2 Type 2 reports, EHNAC accreditation, EPCS certifications, and ISO 9001:2015 reviews, among others. These processes enable us to validate our security controls and ensure adherence to the latest healthcare standards.
